Manzanita Ranch

PROJECT TYPE  Residential
LOCATION  Topanga Canyon, CA

A new house on a 10-acre parcel in Old Topanga Canyon, intended to provide a sustainable retreat nestled in the landscape. The house is designed to integrate in a natural way with the native California surroundings, taking cues for the roof shapes, plan layout and materials from the adjacent terrain.

The project is designed to be maximally sustainable, and incorporates a myriad of green building devices, including drought-tolerant and native landscaping, a water collection system, passive cooling, and the use of low-carbon and local materials throughout. Located in a California high-fire zone, the house is designed to be fire-resistant: in the choice of building and landscape materials, the project siting, and it includes the ability to automatically close the building openings with fire shutters in the event of an emergency.

The courtyard creates a protected space, with views to the mountains beyond.
