The 1960s house in the Trousdale Estates neighborhood of Beverly Hills hadn’t been touched in decades. It still had some of the feel of classic Los Angeles – Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elvis Presley, and Ray Charles had lived nearby – but it needed a major refresh to accommodate its new owner and her three children.

The project took the house down to the studs, then rebuilt it keeping some of the original sensibilities of the mid-century neighborhood. A new fence was added at the street, echoing some of the design motifs of the era. A new pool and spa were created at the location of the existing, and an outdoor kitchen and entertainment area were addded with views across the canyon to the hillsides beyond.

A new glass entry is welcoming, giving views through the house and beyond.

The living room, which had been enclosed spaces, was opened up and a light monitor was added to the roof., creating a central “hub”. The kitchen was relocated to connect this space, to function for family and also for large gatherings hosted at the house.

A cabinet of stained ash and leather “fish scales” hides audio/visual equipment.

Artists working in leather and brass created a zig-zag wall that separates the public from the private spaces. Both the leather and the brass are raw and untreated, and will age over time.
