Tilden House

PROJECT TYPE  Residential
PHOTOGRAPHER Ivan Feign & Kat Phillips

A classic California bungalow….

Kat and Ivan, two photographers, purchased a classic California bungalow that had been subjected to a series of unfortunate remodels. Lewis|Schoeplein quickly determined that the additions to the house over the years could not be salvaged, and the most effective approach would be to keep the structure of the original house, demolish everything else, and start fresh.

The new design kept the footprint of the original house, but reorganized the room locations to give the kitchen access to the rear yard, opened vistas through the house, and added a new master bedroom and bath as a sanctuary space open to the outdoors.

Material choices are fresh, low maintenance, and budget-friendly. The exterior includes concrete board in three colors, new decks, and a decomposed gravel court as an outdoor entertaining space. The interiors use splashes of color in the paint and tile sections, set off by neutrals in white, wood, and gray.
